Where to host your course, cohort, or paid community
Course platforms, community tools, and membership sites, compared on pricing, transaction fees, and what each one includes.
These three groups overlap enough that the boundaries are worth stating. Course platforms are built around structured content: modules, lessons, progress tracking, completion, sometimes certificates. Community platforms are built around ongoing discussion, where the value is in members talking to each other rather than working through material. Membership sites gate recurring access to content that may be either.
Most products here now do some of all three, so the question is which one they were designed for. A course platform with a discussion tab is not the same as a community platform, and a community platform that added lessons is not the same as a course platform. The one it was built for is usually the one that works well.
The economics deserve close attention, because this is a category where the platform's cut can exceed its subscription fee. Some charge a flat monthly rate and take nothing further. Others take a percentage of each transaction on top, and a few take a percentage instead of a subscription. At meaningful revenue those structures diverge sharply — a transaction fee that looks small is a recurring share of everything you earn. Payment processing is charged separately again by the processor in nearly every case.
Also worth confirming before you build on any of these: whether you can export your member list and their email addresses, whether you own the payment relationship or the platform does, and what happens to active subscriptions if you leave.
